Our Menus

A word from our Chef about our Catering Philosophy at Chapel Street

We believe that children need to learn and appreciate food from as young an age as possible.

We have been fortunate to have a state-of-the-art kitchen fitted and because of this we employed a trained and experienced chef so that he could pass on his knowledge of food to the children, staff and parents. We have regular times where the chef will show the children how to bake and cook items like bread, which is baked three to four times a month. The children help to shape the dough and then wait for it to prove and in doing this they understand where the bread comes from and how it comes to be made.

Our aim is to encourage and teach them about British foods and cultural foods as we live in an area that is highly populated with people of different cultures. By sharing their good experience of food we hope to educate them on eating better for life and not just while they are here! Our menus are designed to include everyday items that the children would come across at home or out and about, for example bread, fish fingers and pizza, but the real difference is that we make all of these from scratch rather than buying processed foods!

Having said that, our burgers, sausages and hot dogs are made by the local butcher with our chosen recipe. We make pizzas, fish fingers and such like using the freshest of ingredients and prepared by our chef. We have a wide range of vegetarian foods available which are made to look like or are identical to the main meal so as not to cause any problems having different meals for different children. For instance, vegetarians burgers are made using beans and pulses and then shaped to look like a meat burger; quorn is used as a substitute for roast chicken and soya mince is also used.

Healthy Under 5s

This is a healthy lifestyle programme run by childcare settings such as Chapel Street. Each year the setting works towards a set of standards around good nutrition, oral health and physical activity. If successful in achieving these standards, as we have been, they receive the Healthy Under 5s Award.

This means that children in our care will:

  • Be provided with healthy snacks and drinks in between meals which are tooth friendly
  • Have a pleasant and safe eating environment where good eating habits and social interaction are encouraged
  • Learn about and try a variety of new foods
  • Be provided with healthy meals that are appropriate for children under 5
  • Have opportunities to be physically active
